What is... a Spam Trap?

DIRECT RESPONSE - November/December 2007

Guy Hanson, Business Development Director,
Database Group Interactive.

Address harvesting is a major problem in email broadcasting, particularly with addresses obtained by web spiders – automated search mechanisms. The resulting “unpermissioned” lists carry addresses starting with “sales@”, “info@” and so on.

In response, administrators lay spam traps, deliberately making email address available in website locations that are freely accessible to the email harvesters but which would never normally be used by legitimate parties. Thus the spammers fall into the trap and reveal their true colours. The spam broadcaster can expect to be hit with an ISP block, or put on blacklists.
